In this edition, we’ve rounded up the noteworthy money dates in April 2021. Take a look and mark your calendar with any dates that apply to you.

April 15 — Deadline for estimated tax payments

The IRS recently bumped Tax Day from April 15 to May 17, but that change does not affect estimated tax payments.

So, April 15 remains the deadline for the first quarterly installment of estimated taxes for the 2021 tax year. It applies to the self-employed, who use IRS Form 1040-ES to pay this tax.

April 15 — 3 other tax deadlines (possibly)

Normally, Tax Day coincides with several other deadlines. They include the deadline for:

  1. Contributing to an individual retirement account, or IRA
  2. Contributing to a health savings account, or HSA
  3. Withdrawing excess contributions to an IRA

As of March 29, however, the IRS had yet to specify whether it will extend these deadlines to May 17, too.

The federal agency’s announcement about the postponement of Tax Day did not mention these deadlines, and the agency has not updated its “Filing and Payment Deadlines Questions and Answers” webpage since last year.

So, in case these three deadlines are not extended, you would be wise to assume that they remain April 15.
